The first couple of Maltese to arrive in Australia were convicts and were transported in 1810s and they came to Australia for deserting their British regiments. Also Malta was then a British colony.
There was a man called Antonio Azzopardi he was the first free settler. He arrived in Melbourne in 1837 and was an effective businessman, but there was not many others that followed in his footsteps. By 1881 the Maltese population in Victoria was only 73. This was in spite of the fact that emigration was important to Malta, a small, resource poor country.In 1948 a passage agreement was signed with Malta which turned out to be the first agreement Australia had made with any country other then the Britain’s. Then this resulted into large numbers of arrivals , peaking in the 1950s. By 1966, the Malta born population of Victoria was 26,452.
